The 2011-12 season was Torpedo Kutaisi's 20th season in Georgian Umaglesi Liga. Torpedo began the season with a clash with local rival Zestafoni at the home ground on 7 August 2011. This was the official debut for new coach Giorgi Kiknadze, who was focused on experienced older players. But in his first match, Kiknadze lost the game 1-2. After this, the team won some matches, but these were only home games and Torpedo lost all their away matches, furthermore the team did not show good performance. After the 6th match (Metalurgi Rustavi 0-2), the team held 8th position in the league. Because of this failure Kiknadze was sacked and replaced by Gia Geguchadze. Before Geguchadze came, Torpedo Kutaisi had a clash with their biggest rival from the Soviet time - Dinamo Tbilisi. These matches are called as Georgian Classico because of their fights and intensity. The coach of the hosts was caretaker Giorgi Sukhiashvilli, and fans insisted on a win over their rival. Sukhiashvili and his team won the game 2-1 on 21 September. Geguchadze's rival in his debut match in Torpedo was Gagra. Literally in this match won team their first match away. Than they made six matches winning run and for a one week lead the scoreboard. After the regular season, Torpedo Kutaisi held 3rd position, below Zestafoni and Dinamo Tbilisi. In the play-off round they tried to save this position (3rd position goes to UEFA Europa League). Their competitor was Dinamo, but Torpedo won against them on their ground with Datunaishvili's score 1-0. So they held 3rd position and deserved to play on European competition.
